There are some drivers on the road who don’t know what car maintenance needs to be done to keep their vehicle in good operating condition. Seemingly unnecessary vehicle maintenance is the last thing on their mind as long their car gets them to their destination without any noticeable problems. The problem is, however, that damage could be taking place in the motor, transmission, or other systems without affecting how their vehicle drives. Until their car stops working altogether!

However, with the hot temperatures of summer at our door, it’s important that you ask your mechanic to compile a list of the required vehicle maintenance that will see you safely through summer. Regular vehicle maintenance will not only keep you safer on the road, but it also protects the warranty (if any) on your vehicle, plus boost the re-sale value of your vehicle.

So what car maintenance needs to be done? With a few variations depending on the make and model of your vehicle, here are some of the basic vehicle maintenance items to be aware of:

  • Oil and filter changes—follow the appropriate interval for your car
  • Tire rotation, balancing, check the air pressure and wheel alignment
  • Car battery—check the charge, clean the terminals, and check the alternator
  • Tune up—Inspect and top-off or replace as necessaryall fluids, filters, belts, hoses, spark plugs, brakes, and emissions
  • Windshield wipers—replace about every six month, especially if in a rainy climate
  • Replace burned out or broken lights bulbs
  • The timing belt and/or serpentine belt should be replaced at the recommended mileage interval.
  • Service the air conditioner/heater
  • Check all other fluids, such as transmission, radiator, brakes, and steering
  • Inspect the exhaust system and muffler.

What are the major benefits of regular vehicle maintenance? Your mechanic can let you know what may need to replaced right away, or what can wait a while, and you can drive with peace of mind knowing that you have a reliable and safe source of transportation for many more miles.
