Most vehicle owners have probably heard it said many times that regular oil changes are one of the most effective ways to extend the life of your engine and enhance the operating performance of your car.   Oil changes are relatively simple and inexpensive, especially if you consider the cost of engine damage due to neglecting regular oil changes.

So how often do you really need an oil change? There are two ways to find the answer to this question. First, read your owner’s manual! Secondly, ask your trusted auto mechanic. Many auto shops provide oil change coupons so that customers will take care of a needed oil change at the right interval.

Simply by following the oil change intervals recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer you can prevent excessive engine wear and tear, adding miles and years to the lifespan of your vehicle. Clean oil keeps the engine protected against metal-on-metal contact, preventing overheating caused by friction between the parts.

As oil deteriorates, it loses its effectiveness in lubricating. Your car may then start showing some of the warning signs below.

  1. Dark Oil–Clean oil is an amber color, but after a while, the oil darkens and gets dirty from the particles it collects from the engine.
  2. Noisy Engine–When the oil loses its effectiveness in lubricating the engine, you may start to hear louder engine noises, such as knocking, rumbling, and even roaring.
  3. Warning Light–An illuminated oil change light on the instrument panel means that the oil level is too low and is no longer effective.
  4. Dark Smoke–If you notice dark smoke coming from the muffler, there could be an oil leak or faulty parts in the engine.
  5. Smell Oil–If you smell oil, there is probably a leak. If the smell is mixed with the smell of gas or exhaust fumes, your vehicle is probably overheating and oil is burning in the exhaust area. Serious engine damage could be taking place.
