If you know you will be heading out for a road trip, or your daily commute takes you on long stretches of highway, it is wise to take care of any necessary tire repair issues. Better yet, have a tire service just to make sure everything looks good on your wheels before heading down the road. You don't want to wait until you're stranded to invest in a spare tire.

So before you head down the road, consider these tips:

  • Full-Size Matching: This type of spare gives you more flexibility and means that you probably don't have to drive straight to a tire repair shop. If you're using a full-size matching as your "spare," remember to make it part of your rotation pattern.
  • Full-Size Non-Matching: Although this spare is full size, it may not be the same size as the ground tires. The wheel may also be different than the wheels on which the ground tires are mounted. A full-size non-matching spare should not be a part of your rotation pattern.
  • Full-Size Temporary: This type of spare is built with more lightweight construction and more shallow tread depth. It should match the vehicle's tire size specifications and should only be used as a spare.
  • Compact Temporary: Also lightweight with a shallow tread depth, these spares have much smaller dimensions that require a higher inflation pressure than both standard and temporary spares–generally 60 psi.
  • Folding Temporary: This spare is a little more difficult to use as it has to be inflated with either an air pump or a canister before it can be used.

Do new vehicles have spares?

These days, some new vehicles do not come equipped with a spare, so it would be a good investment to purchase one at the same time you purchase your new vehicle. Knowing which kind is right for your vehicle and knowing where to get it can be a bit tricky. Ask for the assistance of a reliable tire repair technician for professional advice before you make a purchase.
