Have you read your vehicle owner’s manual lately? More than likely, it isn’t even on your list of reading material. Unfortunately, there are many vehicle owners that don’t take car maintenance seriously. As long as their car gets them from point A to point B, everything is fine. Adhering to a regular vehicle maintenance schedule makes sure that your car will take you safely and comfortably from point A to point B.

If you’re not sure when a particular car maintenance issue should be taken care of, get out your owner’s manual and check the Table of Contents. Look at the schedule of car maintenance below that is typically recommended by car manufacturers. Check it against the schedule listed in your owner’s manual to make sure you are following the right vehicle maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle.

  • Every 3,000 to 7,000 Miles. The majority of mechanics still suggest that the oil and oil filter be replaced between 3,000 and 7,000 miles. This is the time to also have the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and wipers, tires and all exterior lights checked.
  • Every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Replace the air filter.  Also, have the battery and coolant inspected.
  • Every 25,000 miles. Replace the fuel filter.
  • Every 30,000 miles. Replace the air filter and power steering fluid and have the coolant, radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and all suspension components inspected and replaced as needed.
  • Every 35,000 miles. Inspect and replace the battery if it is not holding a charge or if it is three to four years old.
  • Every 40,000 miles. Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires, and inspect the ignition system and suspension.
  • Every 60,000 miles. Replace brake pads and brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belt. Inspect the HVAC, suspension components, and tires.

Tip to Remember: Keep a record of all maintenance and repairs performed. This will optimize the resale value of your car, help prevent expensive repairs, avert possible roadside breakdowns, and increase the driving safety of your vehicle.
