More than likely, if you have owned your vehicle for very long, you may have already experienced starting problems. Your vehicle would start just fine one day, and the next, it wouldn’t start at all. The problem is, it is hard to know what is causing your starting problems! One thing to remember is that be sure to have the alternator and battery checked out before you have the starter replaced. Once your mechanic has ruled out those components as the cause of the problem, it is probably time to replace the starter.

But you thought car starters should not have to be replaced! It is true that starters should last for many miles, (possibly up to at least 100,000). Unfortunately, depending on your driving habits, wear and tear of daily use, the age of your car, and poor maintenance, starters can go bad.

There are several issues for what causes a car starter to go bad, such as:

  • The starter contains brushes, gears, and coil windings that wear out,
  • The solenoid has gone bad,
  • Loose bolts prohibit the starter from engaging when the key is turned in the ignition, or
  • The starter may not have been installed properly.

A word of advice:  If there is an obvious problem with either your car starter or alternator, don’t try to keep forcing your car to start. It can cause further damage so that you end up with a car that won’t start at all!

Wondering what causes a car starter to go bad? Contact our ASE-certified technicians at Rebel Automotive for more information about starters, batteries, and alternators, and to schedule an appointment. Our auto shop serves vehicle owners in Henderson, NV, Las Vegas, NV, and North Las Vegas, NV.
