One reason that people put off getting car service when it’s really needed is that even what seems like a small repair or replacement is sometimes shockingly expensive. You can’t be blamed if you wonder, ‘Why is car repair so expensive?’ But the fact is you’ll need to spend money now to be spared from having to spend a lot more money in the future. Make sure that you have car service at the interval your auto mechanic recommends.

Why is car repairs so expensive?

  1. Car parts are simply expensive to replace – much of their cost depends on where they come from and their manufacturer.
  2. Tires alone are expensive – newer technology lengthens a tire’s working life, but they’re still quite pricey.
  3. Waiting to replace brakes – too many wait until their brake pads are so worn down that they damage the rotors. This just makes brake replacement that much more expensive.
  4. Waiting too long to replace fluids – cars need all kinds of fluid, including brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant for the air conditioner. If you wait too long between services, you could damage your car. This can cost thousands of dollars to fix.
  5. New safety Systems – cars come with more and more new safety systems. These systems make the car more expensive to buy in the first place. It’s also costly to repair them if they need service.
  6. Touch Screens and Other New Technology – Along with safety systems, cars now come with touch screens and other technologies. Again, this technology raises the initial cost of the car and can make it pricey to repair.
  7. The cost of new materials – New materials used to make cars make them more energy efficient, and repairing those materials can also be expensive.
  8. Paint and bodywork – There will likely be times when your car needs a ding or dent straightened out or a coat of paint. These things also cost.

These are some of the factors that go into how much car service will cost you. Other factors are the car’s make and model, its mileage, its age and how gently or vigorously you drive it.
