Did you know that the condition of your car axles impacts steering, driving, and braking? Axles also serve to transmit power from the engine to the wheels as well as carrying the entire weight of the vehicle. Unless axles become damaged in some way, most can last well over 100,000 miles. But axles, along with car struts and shocks, are subjected to a lot of stress as they are constantly rotating and flexing to accommodate road conditions.

So what are the signs of a bad axle? Here are some of the more obvious signs:

  • Odd sounds: Clicking and clunking sounds are the most common signs of a bad car axle, most often heard during sharp turns or when increasing or decreasing your speed.
  • Leaking grease: You may see grease on the inside of the tire, steering and suspension components, or on the ground as the seal is broken.
  • Vibration: A bent axle shaft can cause excessive vibration while driving, becoming more obvious as your speed increases.
  • Visible Misalignment: A bent axle will also often cause a visible deflection in the mounting of the tires. You may not feel a difference when driving but people outside the vehicle may notice the wobble visibly.
  • Poor braking performance: As the bent axle makes the wheel wobble, the brake pads can become misaligned with the wheels.

A word to the wise: Don’t ignore a bad car axle but have it repaired as soon as possible! It not only will make your vehicle difficult to steer and brake, but it will also compromise the safety of you and your passengers.
