Whether you’re still planning a summer road trip or if it’s just for your short commute to work, you certainly want a safe and reliable vehicle, as well as a vehicle that is friendly to your wallet. But how can we save money at the pump? One answer is to actually reduce the amount of driving we do, such as staying home more, carpooling, using public transportation, and combining trips.

But there are times when we do need to drive! Our auto shop has several tips on how to improve fuel economy, primarily by driving more efficiently and making sure your car is properly serviced.

  1. Slow Down. Poor driving habits, such as speeding, quick braking, and rapid acceleration, can negatively affect fuel economy. Even though the speed limit is much higher in most parts of the country, gas mileage decreases above 50 miles per hour. Using cruise control when possible can improve fuel economy by up to 14%.
  2. Pack Light. For every additional 100 pounds in your car, gas mileage will be reduced, costing about 3 cents more per gallon.
  3. Avoid Idling. Idling gets zero miles per gallon and can burn as much as one gallon of gas each hour so turn off your car if you are sitting still for more than a minute or two.
  4. Check Tire Pressure. Underinflated tires create more drag on the road and waste gas. Follow the guidelines in your vehicle's owner's manual for the proper inflation pressure.
  5. Replace Spark Plugs. Bad spark plugs can decrease fuel economy by up to 30%. If your gas mileage drops suddenly, there's a good chance it's because of misfiring spark plugs.
  6. Check the Alignment. Misaligned tires drag instead of roll freely and can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 10%. In addition, the tires can wear out more quickly, also resulting in lower gas mileage. Tires should be balanced and rotated according to your owner's manual to ensure improved tire performance and fuel economy.
  7. Keep it Cool. Fill your tank either early in the morning or late at night if possible, as fuel is the densest when it is cooler. You will get more gas for the same amount of money.

A word of advice: Pay attention to your driving habits, and follow your vehicle’s preventative maintenance schedule for improved gas mileage, to help save your car, and help save the environment.
