Not many motorists give a lot of thought to the exhaust system until they start to hear a lot of strange noises coming from the muffler. Drivers should be aware that the exhaust system performs important functions to keep their vehicle running efficiently.

If problems are neglected, not only can damage occur to your car, you can also put your health in question. The main job of the exhaust system is to release the gaseous by-products of internal combustion. Normally, these emissions are very toxic.  It's a good thing that today's modern cars are equipped with catalytic converters to convert the toxic exhaust into non-toxic water vapor and carbon dioxide.

The most common thing that can go wrong with an exhaust system is a leak. Leaks can be caused for two reasons:

  • The exhaust system is mounted on the underside of your car. That means it is exposed to a lot of road conditions that can cause havoc. Even just normal wear and tear means that older cars should be inspected frequently for leaks. Especially if the muffler is starting to get noisy!
  • The water vapor produced by the catalytic converter can also cause problems. When you only take your car for a short trip, the water vapor produced does not get expelled. So, it condenses back into the water, which can cause rust. Another by-product in engine emissions is sulfur. If it mixes with the water left in the exhaust system, it can form a corrosive acid that will eat away at the exhaust system and muffler

Exhaust leaks reduce fuel efficiency, create a lot of noise from the muffler, and more crucial, presents a danger to your health. If you have a leak, harmful fumes are potentially reaching the inside of your car (especially with leaks near the exhaust manifold). It only takes a small amount of carbon monoxide (another by-product of emissions) to impair your driving and your health.

Play it safe! Take a few minutes to conduct an inspection of your exhaust system for leaking the next time you have an oil change or tire inspection.
