Are you wondering just what does car service include? The first place to look for the list of recommended maintenance is your owner’s manual (you should find it in the glovebox), which typically includes the following services:
- Change the oil and replace the filter – about every 3,000–5,000 miles.
- Rotate tires – about every 5,000–7,000 miles (or at every oil change). If the tread is getting too low, it may be necessary to purchase new tires.
- Multi-point inspection – Have your mechanic inspect the various systems and components of your vehicle every time you are in the auto shop for another service, such as an oil change or tire rotation.
- Check the battery – Three to five years is the average lifespan of a battery. If it is not holding a charge or if it is older than four or five years, it may need to be replaced.
- Service the brakes – about every 30,000–70,000 miles (depending on your driving style) you may need to replace brake pads and rotors.
- Check hoses and belts – If they are becoming brittle and cracked, they should be replaced so that any fluids, such as engine oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, etc., are not leaking out.
- Replace cabin and engine air filters – about every 15,000–30,000 miles.
- Replace wiper blades – about every six to 12 months, especially if you live in a rainy climate.
Remember: If you add up the cost of the above car services, plus gas, insurance, or car repair issues when compared to the cost of a new vehicle, it makes better sense financially to take care of your current car so that it remains safe and reliable for many more miles.
