Many drivers just rely on the little sticker in the window for their next oil change and don't pay much attention to the various factors that affect the recommended interval between oil changes. However, driving style affects the correct oil change interval for your specific vehicle. How do you know if the oil change schedule recommended by your auto mechanic is correct?

In a survey conducted by AAA, it was found that more than 50% of all motorists believe they typically drive in "normal" conditions. As you will see, this is not always true! Take a minute to understand the difference between "normal" and "severe" driving. Then, you can make an informed decision regarding the correct oil change interval for your vehicle.

Is your driving "normal" or "severe"?

A reliable source for the answer to this question is your owner's manual. You will probably see two sets of maintenance schedules--one for "normal" driving and one for "severe" driving.

  • What is "Normal" Driving? This is based on ideal driving conditions–short distances, never over the speed limit, level roads, no load, etc. The average driver would have a hard time staying within the range of "normal" driving conditions. The recommended oil change interval in your owner's manual will generally be between every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
  • What is "Severe" Driving? The average driver will generally fall within this category—frequent short trips, driving in hot weather, stop-and-go traffic, transporting items on a roof-top carrier, towing a trailer, and driving through mountainous passes. The typical recommendation is an oil change about every 3,000 miles.

You may have heard this quote from Benjamin Franklin many times, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!" In other words, err on the side of caution and follow a schedule of oil changes of about every 3,000 miles to enhance and protect the performance and longevity of your vehicle.
