The average driver knows very little about the transmission in their vehicle let alone what a transmission service entails. Thus, the two little words "transmission repair" often strike fear in their minds. All they can see are dollars flying out the window! However, their fear and confusion can be decreased if they do a little research to understand the various types of transmission repair -- whether their vehicle requires a minor service or a major overhaul.

In-Car Transmission Repair – There are some issues that can be taken care of by a simple adjustment in which the transmission remains in the vehicle. This type of repair is less costly than a complete overhaul or replacement.

  • Improper shifting: If a computer-controlled transmission is not shifting properly, it is often the result of the computer sending incorrect signals, or the car is not reacting to the computer command. In a non-computer-controlled transmission, the throttle cable or the vacuum modulator may need adjusting. In some older transmissions, bands can be adjusted to resolve "slipping" problems (when an engine races briefly when shifting from one gear to the next.
  • Resealing: Resealing will take off most external fluid leaks. But if the front seat must be replaced, the unit must first be removed from the vehicle in order to gain access to it, making it a much costlier job.
  • External Transmission Repair – There are other problems that can only be resolved by removing the unit from the vehicle. This type of repair is more costly, as it requires more hours of labor and typically involves replacing various components.
  • Rebuilding:  The transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled so that each part can be inspected for wear and damage. Depending on its condition, it will either be cleaned in a special solution or replaced. The most common parts to be replaced are ones that have friction surfaces, such as bands and clutches, seals and gaskets. The torque converter is also replaced.
  • Replacement: If a complete overhaul is required, your mechanic may recommend replacing the unit with another rebuilt or remanufactured unit. This option will get you out of the shop and on your way fairly quickly.
