Spring is here and with that, there are new drivers getting behind the wheel, either in driving classes or with permits. If you have a new driver in your household, there is an important step to take that will enhance their safety behind the wheel. Be sure that the vehicle your new driver uses has had all the recommended vehicle maintenance performed at the appropriate interval. Often, new drivers cannot recognize signs of potential car maintenance problems due to their lack of experience.

As a reminder when checking out your vehicle, basic vehicle maintenance includes:

  • Spark plugs and wires – Keep them clean of dirt and corrosion. Dirty spark plugs decrease vehicle performance and fuel mileage.
  • Caps -- Make sure all caps (fuel tank, radiator, brake and transmission fluids) are tight and seals are good to keep out water and debris.
  • Headlights -- Clean cloudy and dirty headlights, and replace any burned out bulbs.
  • Tires – Because changes in temperatures cause inflation pressure to fluctuate, check it frequently. Properly inflated tires wear more evenly and increase gas mileage. Rotate tires on a regular basis to prevent premature tread wear.
  • Clean car -- Teach your new driver to be responsible for keeping the car washed and clean—inside and out!
  • Air Filter -- Have the air filter checked and changed as necessary to keep the circulating air clean.
  • Fluid levels - Check the level of all critical fluids frequently and top-off as needed.
  • Windshield - Replace old wiper blades and make sure the washer fluid reservoir is filled and clean.
  • Oil changes – Regular oil changes are the key to a long lasting car.

If you are the parent or guardian of a new driver, you are the number one influence in molding them into a safe and capable driver. In addition to being a role model of safe driving practices, teach your new driver about good car maintenance.

Remember: Don't wait for something to go wrong before you practice good vehicle maintenance.
