It probably sounds “old school” when you hear the term “tune up” when referencing vehicle maintenance. Years ago, a “tune-up” simply meant having your vehicle serviced to keep it running at its best. With more sophisticated computer-controlled engines, a car diagnostic test is the efficient car tune-up today. The simple tune-up of yesterday might not be sufficient as a necessary element in car care. The fact is tune-ups are a vital part of vehicle maintenance and should never be overlooked. So to answer the question “Is a tune-up service still necessary?” “Yes!”

When reading through the owner’s manual of your vehicle, you will notice a number of service intervals. A typical service includes regular oil and filter changes and a tire rotation. Beyond that, the service intervals become more extensive as your vehicle accrues more mileage. A tune-up is identified as a major service and includes replacement of the spark plugs and spark plug wires. However, with newer vehicles, this is only necessary around 100k miles.

It is common to see miss-fire codes when the “check engine” light comes on, and all too often, indicates a failing ignition coil. Nowadays, instead of a large robust coil with wires carrying an electrical spark to the cylinder, sophisticated engines use a “coil over plug design” with many small coils. This is an awesome design and great engineering, but with one exception. When a spark plug wears, the voltage demand rises exponentially. These new coils don’t have the capacity to hold a reserve in order to meet the extra load so will overheat to the point of failing. Thus, this requires changing the spark plugs earlier than the recommended service interval. If the coils don’t need to be replaced, you’ll save time, money and avoid the inconvenience of looking at that pesky “check engine” light.

So, hopefully, it is clear now that tune-ups are still necessary to maintain your vehicle’s performance. When was the last time you had your vehicle tuned up? Have you been noticing any problems with engine performance or poor gas mileage? It may be time for a car tune up service.
