The first question some drivers may ask is what do axles do and how long will they last? The job of the car axle is to assist in driving, steering, and braking by linking the power from the engine to the tires. They are also designed to hold the entire weight of the vehicle. Most people probably won’t own a vehicle long enough to actually have to replace a car axle.

However, it is a fact that car axles can be affected by the condition of car shocks. Car axles are exposed to constant stress, rotating and flexing to accommodate varying road conditions. So if your car shocks are wearing out and aren’t protecting the axles, hitting an unexpected pothole or bump in the road can damage an axle, either bending it or causing it to snap.

So make sure that your car shocks are kept in good condition to help absorb and stabilize your vehicle when turning, braking, accelerating, or hitting a bump in the road. They help your tires maintain contact with the road by preventing your car from bouncing every time it hits a bump. Car shocks should generally last around 75,000 to 90,000 miles under normal driving conditions although it is possible they could need replacing earlier (about 40,000 to 50,000 miles) if they are used for heavy-duty driving on a constant basis.

So how do you know if your car axle is bad? Here are some obvious signs of a bad axle:

  • You hear clunking sounds coming from the drive shaft while shifting.
  • You feel excessive vibrating in the steering wheel and seat while driving.
  • You notice uneven wear patterns on the tires and you have to replace them sooner than expected.
  • Your car is actually undrivable because power is not being transferred from the engine to the wheels.

How can you protect your car shocks and car axles?

  • Don’t exceed the manufacturer’s weight limit of your vehicle (cargo plus passengers).
  • Consider the age of your vehicle. Axles and car shocks become brittle and rusty as the miles add up and their strength is lost.
  • They are constantly exposed to bad driving conditions.

Tip to Remember:  To help maintain the strength of your car axles and shocks, be careful where you drive—avoid bumpy roads, potholes, hitting curbs, or other obstacles in the road. It can be quite costly to replace one or all axles, car shocks, plus new tires!
