For many drivers, a vehicle is their second largest investment, next to their home. To protect that automotive investment, it is important to establish and follow a maintenance plan. Even though a tune up in today's modern vehicle isn't the same as it was years ago, it should still be part of the plan to ensure you get the maximum reliability and safety from the vehicle you depend upon. The manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule (found in your owner's manual), typically includes what they still call a "car tune up."

What is a Tune Up Today?

• Simply stated the orderly process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment that is necessary periodically to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency.

Ignition systems have become much more reliable over the years. Many engines don't have distributors anymore but use a Direct Ignition System (DIS). These systems can either mount one ignition coil on each spark plug or share one coil for two plus, thus eliminating the need of a distributor.

What was a Tune Up Yesterday?

• For engines that use a distributor, replace the distributor cap, distributor rotor, and ignition wires in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. The spark plugs may still need to be replaced on a regular basis as well.

Remember: A tune-up is an investment that will pay back with improved fuel economy, longer engine life, and cleaner air. Even though some manufacturers have extended those intervals to 100,000 miles, this doesn't apply to all engines. You will want to enlist the assistance of your local auto mechanic for a maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle and driving conditions.

To restore the performance of your truck or car, have a quality tune-up performed by a certified auto shop.
