As you may have experienced, if you keep your vehicle long enough, you may start experiencing problems with the transmission--one of the most important and complex components of your automobile (this is why a transmission repair is so costly). The main function of the transmission is to carry the engine's power to the drive axle through a series of gears. Without these gears helping the engine rotate at different speeds, your car would only go forward in one year. To keep the gears rotating smoothly, regular transmission service is a must!

Check your owner's manual for the recommended service intervals. This will help prevent an untimely and costly transmission repair.

5 Transmission Service Tips:

  1. Check the transmission fluid level and quality on a regular basis by a qualified transmission repair technician. If the level is too low, there could be a leak. Have it taken care of before it becomes a bigger leak!
  2. Change the fluid as recommended in the vehicle's manual, or when it becomes too dark or dirty (more brown than red).
  3. Replace the fluid with the same type specified in your manual or stated on the dipstick. Many of the newer vehicles are sensitive to fluid types.
  4. Wait until your car comes to a complete stop before shifting into Reverse or Park, and never shift into Reverse or Park while the engine is running at high RPMs. Breaking these rules almost guarantees that your vehicle would be headed toward a major transmission repair.
  5. Don't tow a car with the traction wheels on the road. If towing a heavy trailer for very long, consider installing an additional fluid cooler and change the fluid more often. Your owner's manual will state the correct towing procedures for your car.

Remember: Prevent a costly transmission repair by following these five transmission service tips!
